I finally finished watching all the episodes of the "Yowamushi Pedal" anime!

In the lingering feeling of having finished a long race, the first thing that came to mind was—Junta Teshima

I really wanted to draw him with my own hands—a hardworking, clumsy, yet incredibly loyal friend.

This time, the theme of the piece is a quiet moment when Senior Teshima relaxes and brews coffee.

It's different from during the race.Adult composure and warmthThis expresses that.

"I bet Teshima-senpai makes expressions like this too." This is a look at the meticulous production process, packed with such fantasies.

Junta Teshima from "Yowamushi Pedal": A moment of brewing coffee.

Captain's rest

The moment I finished watching all the episodes of the "Yowamushi Pedal" anime, what remained in my heart was the passion of the races and the moments that were shown unexpectedly. Teshima-senpai's calm expressionThat's it.

She's hardworking, down-to-earth, yet somehow smart. I've been drawn to that contrast.“favorite”I really wanted to draw it with my own hands.

This time, the theme of the piece is the peaceful moment when Senior Teshima brews coffee.

I also referenced the tea time scene shown in the C-part after the ending credits, as well as the calm and relaxing illustrations that have been used for merchandise.

I wanted to capture both the grittiness of "the efforts of an ordinary person" and "the smart demeanor befitting a captain" in a single image—that was my intention when I drew it.

This time's focus: "Expression of texture and light"

The metallic feel of the pot

Matte metallic finish

The part I spent the most time on this time was the metallic finish of the pot.

I repainted it many times to express the "smooth reflection" when light hits it.

Actually, before arriving at this final version, I completely failed once...

The rejected design was too metallic!

The moment I saw it, I knew "No, this isn't it!" It had such a strong "this isn't it" feeling that I immediately rejected it.

Metals,

  • Will it be enveloped in a soft light?
  • Whether you give it a crisp, metallic look or not, that difference alone can completely change the atmosphere of the painting.

I actually wanted to use a black pot, but it would clash with Teshima-senpai's hair color, so I made some adjustments, like using a metallic one, to balance the colors.

The shape of the teapot is Symmetry ruler I drew it using [this tool].

Inorganic objects can be surprisingly well-balanced when using a symmetry ruler. So, that's the "point of discovery" this time.

Wavy hair and facial expression

When you think of Teshima-senpai, you think of that distinctive wavy hair.

And his expression conveys a sense of confidence.

This time, in order to bring out that "essence," I paid particular attention to the flow of the hair and the shape of the mouth.

  • Draw the mouth a little larger.
  • The bone structure is made slightly firmer to retain masculinity.
  • Adjust so that the shoulders don't look too narrow.

This was my first time drawing a man with wavy hair, so I learned a lot and made many new discoveries, like "Oh, there's this way of drawing it too!"

Illustrator's Growth Notes

This time, I'm going to take a bold step Carefully depict the shadows. I took on the challenge of doing that.

Because it was a part I hadn't really paid much attention to before, it was a process full of realizations, like, "Wow, shadows really do change the impression of a painting so much!"

First, export the completed Teshima-senpai as a PNG file.
Insert it at the top of the new layer.
Then, apply "Alpha Lock" to prevent the background from being completely filled in.

Fill the layer with dark green.

I think matching the shadow color to the background wall makes it blend in more naturally.

Align the light source (top left) and slightly shift the shadow layer to the bottom right.

At this point, the "shadowy" quality is already starting to emerge, which is quite impressive.

The shadows are too strong, so I'll soften them with Gaussian blur.

Select "Adjust" → "Gaussian Blur," and move the slider to the right to achieve your desired level of softness. 16% I've settled on this.

The shadows are now complete. When light shines on them, they look a little more subtle, but compared to the version without shadows, the whole picture gains a lot more depth, and I really felt, "Shadows are amazing...!"

I had never consciously considered shadows when drawing before, so this challenge was a very valuable experience.

Tools used (iPad Air, Procreate, Apple Pencil)

This illustration also features my usual partner iPad Air × Procreate × Apple Pencil I drew it using a combination of these elements.

It works really well with the Apple Pencil, and I can draw fine details like hair strands and metallic reflections smoothly, which is very comfortable.
